Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is psychodynamic therapy?
A form of talk therapy that examines how earlier experience, emotional conflict, and relationship patterns shape present feelings and behavior, working to make longstanding patterns understandable rather than only managing symptoms.
What is integrative psychotherapy?
Therapy that draws on more than one framework, selected according to a person's needs and clinical presentation. At this practice the integration is anchored in a psychodynamic understanding of the person.
How long does psychotherapy take?
Depth-oriented work generally involves regular sessions over a sustained period, since the patterns being examined developed over years. Duration is discussed collaboratively and revisited as the work proceeds rather than fixed at the outset.
How often do clients attend?
Weekly sessions are common in depth-oriented work, and some treatments call for a different frequency. What is appropriate is discussed during initial planning.
What happens during the first appointment?
A conversation about what brings you to therapy now, relevant history, what you have already tried, and what you hope to understand — along with practical matters such as scheduling, fees, and confidentiality.
Do I need a diagnosis to begin?
No. Many people begin because a pattern is causing difficulty rather than because they arrive with a diagnosis.
Do you work with personality disorders?
Yes. Personality-related difficulties are a primary area of focus, including borderline and narcissistic personality patterns.
What is therapy for BPD like?
It generally involves consistent longer-term work with a clear frame, focused on emotional regulation, impulsivity, identity, and relationships, drawing on MBT, TFP, and DBT concepts as clinically appropriate.
Do you work with narcissistic personality difficulties?
Yes, primarily with people seeking to understand their own patterns of self-esteem regulation, shame, and interpersonal strain. No clinician can diagnose a person who has not been evaluated.
What is mentalization-based therapy?
A psychodynamically informed treatment focused on the capacity to understand behavior in terms of underlying thoughts and feelings, particularly when that capacity breaks down under emotional pressure.
What is transference-focused psychotherapy?
A structured psychodynamic treatment for severe personality difficulties that works within an explicit treatment contract and gives central attention to patterns enacted in the therapy relationship.
Do you work with addiction?
Yes, including alcohol and substance use and compulsive behaviors. Some situations also require medical evaluation or a higher level of care, which is considered during assessment.
Do you provide couples therapy?
Yes. Couples work focuses on the recurring pattern between two people rather than on determining who is at fault.
Do you provide family therapy?
Yes. Family sessions consider difficulties in the context of the relationships surrounding them.
